In the final On the Mat rankings before the Christmas break, Grand Junction remains No. 3 in Class 5A. The Tigers also have two top-ranked wrestlers and two ranked No. 2. Central moved up one spot to No. 5 in the Class 4A rankings this week and has six wrestlers ranked in the top five. Coming off victories at the Warrior Classic and Jackpot Duals, the Tigers have returning state champ Dawson Collins ranked No. 1 at 120 pounds as well as Hunter Tobiasson, a second-place state finisher last year, ranked No. 1 at 220. JT Skalecki (170) and Kieran Thompson (113) are ranked No. 2, and Andrew Leyba is ranked No. 4 at 106 for the Tigers. Fruita Monument has senior Keegan Bailey ranked No. 3 at 195 in 5A. Heavyweight Casey Hudson, who won the Warrior Classic, remains unbeaten on the season but is only ranked No. 10 in 5A. In 4A, Central has Tiga Lundin (145) and Connor Shenk (220) ranked No. 3, and Dre Martinez is at No. 4 at 138. Davian Sandoval (106), Luke Pleasant (113) and Shaun Stepisnik (182) are ranked No. 5. Montrose's Grady Nickolaus (120) is ranked fifth and Cole Simmons sixth at 182 in 4A. In Class 2A, Cedaredge moved up to No. 2 in the team rankings and has two top-ranked wrestlers. Returning state champions Trey Geyer (126) and Sean Dale (132) and ranked No. 1, and Taj Van der Linde (220) is ranked No. 2. Derek Sanchez is No. 4 at heavyweight and Lane Hunsberger (106) is No. 5 for the Bruins. Paonia has three wrestlers ranked at the top in 2A. Coming off his Warrior Classic title at 160, Grey Neal is ranked No. 1 along with Anthony Felice (195) and heavyweight Levi Peterson. Sackett Chesnik is ranked third at 145 and Anthony Miller (182) is No. 4 Two other Warrior Classic champs are ranked No. 1 in 2A: Meeker's Tannen Kennedy (145) and Nucla's Will Gabriel (182). Also in 2A, Presley Pene (126) is ranked No. 5 and Jace Peebles (170) is No. 6 for Hotchkiss. In 3A, Delta has Gauge Lockhart ranked No. 4 at 195 and Adien Barrios (170) at No. 5. Olathe has three wrestlers in the top six: Brent Gray (152) at No. 4, Elias Ramirez (138) and Clay Yarnell (152) at No. 6. Several area wrestlers are battling injuries early in the season, including Grand Valley's returning state champion AJ Serna and two-time state placer Sergio Campos of Hotchkiss. In total, there are nine No. 1-ranked wrestlers from the area in one of the four classifications. There are also three No. 2-ranked wrestlers and four at No. 3.
